Online and Off-Campus Programs

Michigan State University, located in East Lansing, Michigan (USA) provides students with learning opportunities that extend beyond its East Lansing campus. Select academic programs are offered partially or totally online while others may be completed at off-campus locations across the state of Michigan. The information presented below highlights such learning opportunities.

Online Courses

Over 100 graduate and undergraduate courses are offered via the Internet. Courses offered online can be found in the Class Search. Online and hybrid courses may require regularly scheduled classroom time or face-to-face contact (for requirements such as exams, labs, etc.). Such requirements will be noted.

Online and Hybrid Programs
State authorization regulations covering the delivery of distance education vary from state to state, and some states may participate in a consortium agreement covering distance education. Please see MSU State Authorization Status State-By-State Summary for details regarding the states in which Michigan State University is authorized to deliver distance education programs.

Academic programs delivered totally online or via hybrid format are listed below.

"Online" under Delivery column indicates the program is offered totally online. Texts, reading lists, proctored examinations and/or other non-instructional experiences may be required as stipulated.

"Hybrid" under Delivery column indicates a program that blends online instruction with required or scheduled in-person contact, including examinations, laboratories, etc. At least 50% or more of the courses required for the degree or certificate are delivered through online instruction. Text, reading lists, and/or other materials are stipulated.

Many individual courses are offered in online and hybrid format. The U.S. Department of Education has rescinded the Dear Colleague letter from 06-17; therefore, if a program offers-even within its general education requirements-at least one online or hybrid course, the program is considered a hybrid program. By this definition, most programs at MSU are considered hybrid with the exception of the fully online programs listed on this page.

Personal Enrichment and Non-Credit Offerings

Alumni Lifelong Education Evening College - Provides a wide variety of non-credit personal enrichment courses to alumni and friends of MSU in the Lansing area and the surrounding region.

Professional Licensure and Certification

Professional Licensure and Certification Federal regulations require MSU to publicly disclose, for each educational program designed to meet the educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification required for employment in an occupation (or advertised as meeting those requirements), information about whether program completion would meet those requirements in a state. These public disclosure requirements apply to all programs, regardless of their modality (i.e., on-ground, online, and hybrid programs). MSU discloses the required information related to the educational requirements for professional licensure and certification in the table at Professional Licensure and Certification-Public Disclosures.

All current and prospective students are encouraged to contact the applicable professional licensure/certification boards in their respective states for additional information regarding professional licensure/certification requirements, including, without limitation, information regarding any non-educational requirements (such as work experience, background clearance, or examination by outside entities, such as bar examinations).
