Late Drops, Adds and Section Changes

After the first 1/14th of the term of instruction (the fifth class day of the Fall and Spring semesters), students must process adds and section changes at the teaching department and must obtain approval from the authorizing officers (Instructor, Assistant Dean, Department Chair). Drops after the middle of the term of instruction must be processed by the Assistant/Associate Dean's office of the student's college.

The last day for dropping courses with no grade reported is the middle of the term of instruction. Click on the section number of the course in the Class Search to ascertain the date.

        Enrollment

Students are expected to complete the courses in which they enroll. If a change is necessary, it may be made only with the appropriate approvals as explained below.

Students are responsible for:

  • Enrolling in courses for which they are eligible.
  • Reviewing and understanding enrollment deadlines published in the student information system.
  • Monitoring their university email accounts and university systems for enrollment-related communications.
  • Reviewing their class schedule and making any necessary enrollment changes by published deadlines.
  • Attending and participating in courses in which they are enrolled.
  • Resolving any holds (service indicators) that may affect enrollment, readmission, or university services.
  • Understanding the academic and financial implications of adding or dropping courses or withdrawing from the university.
  • Maintaining accurate personal, residency, and other information required by the university.

Failure to meet enrollment requirements or deadlines may affect a student’s academic record, enrollment status, financial aid eligibility, tuition and fee assessments, or progress toward degree completion.

Enrollment Deadlines

Enrollment deadlines are displayed in the student information system and Class Search. Classes that do not meet for the standard duration of the semester, known as dynamically dated classes, will have different dates than standard term classes, including the open add end date, the last day to drop with refund, and the last day to drop with no grade reported.

Adding Courses

Students may add courses through the student information system until the Open Add End Date. This date corresponds to the first 1/14th of the course.

After the Open Add End Date, courses may be added only with approval from the department offering the course and the associate or assistant dean of the student’s college.

Changing Course Sections

Students may change sections of the same course through the student information system until the Open Add End Date. After the Open Add End Date, section changes must be approved by the department offering the course.

Dropping Courses

Students may drop courses through the student information system until the Last Day to Drop with No Grade Reported. This date corresponds to the middle of the course. Students who wish to drop all courses in a term should refer to the Withdrawal from the University policy.

Dropping a Course After the Last Day or Drop with No Grade Reported

After the Last Day to Drop with No Grade Reported, a course may be dropped only to correct an enrollment error or because of circumstances of catastrophic impact, such as a serious illness. The course remains on the student’s academic record. A W grade may be assigned if the student is passing the course at the time of drop. Students who are failing at the time of the drop will receive a 0.0 or N grade depending on the grading basis of the course.

Undergraduate students must obtain approval from the associate or assistant dean of their college. Graduate students must obtain approval from their advisor or major professor and graduate program director.

Classes that do not meet for the standard duration of the semester, known as dynamically dated classes, will have different drop dates than standard term classes, including the open add end date, the last day to drop with refund, and the last day to drop with no grade reported.
