Step-by-Step Guide to Veterans Education Benefits


  1. Apply for admission to Michigan State University

  2. Order your transcripts

    1. Military transcripts can be ordered at https://jst.doded.mil/official.html

    2. Air Force at http://www.airforce.com/

  3. Apply for VA Education Benefits through VONAPP (Veterans On-Line Application)

    1. a. Students transferring to MSU from another institution must complete a Change of Program and Place of Training form through VONAPP

  4. Apply for Financial Aid

  5. Submit required forms for VA certification to the Veterans Certification team. Required forms:

    1. Enrollment Certification Request (pdf) (all students receiving benefits must complete)

    2. Degree Program Plan (pdf) (only for Graduate and 2nd bachelor degree seeking students)

    3. VA Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or Award Letter (if you have not applied for VA Benefits, see step 3)

    4. Copy of your DD214 (discharge from active duty), if applicable.

  6. Guest Student Certification

    1. Guest Student’s at Michigan State University must provide the Veterans Certification team the following:

      1. "Parent Letter" from your home institution authorizing the certification of the MSU courses

      2. Enrollment Certification Request (pdf)

      3. VA Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or Award Letter

    2. MSU student taking a course at another institution must provide the Veterans Certification team the following:

      1. Copy of enrolled courses at the other institution

      2. Letter from your MSU Advisor, verifying enrolled courses are transferable to MSU
