Minor in African American and African Studies

The Minor in African American and African Studies, administered by the College of Arts and Letters, provides students with an interdisciplinary study of the historical and contemporary lived experiences of African descendants in the United States and elsewhere in the African Diaspora, as well as continental African nations and peoples.

The minor is available to students who are enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs at Michigan State University. The minor is divided into two tracks – the Social Science Track (15 credits) and the Humanities Track (18 credits).

For students pursuing the Humanities track and with the approval of the department and college that administers the student’s degree program, 6 of the 18 credits in courses that are used to satisfy the minor may also be used to satisfy the requirements for the bachelor’s degree. The 12-credit core curriculum requirement comprised of AAAS 100, 300, 390, and 495 are unique credits that may not be used to satisfy a university, college, or major requirement for the student’s bachelor’s degree program.

For students pursuing the Social Science track, the 6-credit core curriculum comprised of AAAS 100 and 300 are unique credits that may not be used to satisfy a university, college, or major requirement for the student’s bachelor’s degree program.
