Upward Bound Program

The Upward Bound Program is designed to assist high school students, who are low-income and/or potential first generation college students, in generating the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of postsecondary education. Students are admitted to the program on the basis of an assessment of their academic performance, recommendations from teachers and counselors, and a personal interview.

The program provides services such as personal and group counseling; instruction in careers, composition and literature, mathematics, laboratory science; tutoring; field trips; service learning; a one-week summer residential living experience; college preparation; and numerous extra-curricular activities. College preparatory activities include college tours, admissions and financial aid workshops, speakers who address topics such as choosing a major, adjusting to college life, orientation testing, and personal finances. These services are provided during the summer and the academic year components of the program. Instruction and tutorial assistance are provided by university faculty, secondary school teachers, graduate and undergraduate students.
