Principles and Instructions Governing MSU Student Identification

Principles

  1. Each student of Michigan State University is eligible for an identification card (Spartan Card) following initial enrollment.
  2. The Spartan Card is the property of Michigan State University.
  3. Library privileges, access to university buildings, facilities and classrooms, purchase of tickets, and entry into athletic and entertainment events may require the possession and presentation of the Spartan Card upon request.
  4. Alteration, falsification, or misuse of the Spartan Card is a violation of General Student Regulation 5.00 and other regulations as applicable.

Instructions

  1. Each student is responsible for all use of the Spartan Card whether authorized or unauthorized. The Spartan Card should not be loaned, or left where it might be used by an unauthorized person. The Spartan Card can be confiscated by authorized MSU personnel for attempted misuse of the Spartan Card by a person who is not the owner
    of the card.
  2. In case the Spartan Card is lost, go online at spartancash.com to deactivate meals and Spartan Cash and call the main Library 1-517-355-2333 immediately. Each student is responsible for all materials checked out of the libraries with the Spartan Card.
  3. Replacement Costs
Replacement Student Spartan Card is $20.00
Replacement ID cards are made in the MSU ID office, 170 International Center. Physical government-issued photo ID is required (copies, whether photo or electronic, are not accepted). The charge will be applied to the student receivables account of the student.

For additional information visit idoffice.msu.edu, email idoffice@msu.edu, or call (517) 355-4500.

Student Spouses

Spouses of registered students may obtain IDs entitling them to certain privileges. The student and spouse must appear in person in 170 International Center and present the student’s valid Spartan Card, the spouse's physical government-issued photo ID, and proof of marriage. The fee for an initial non-prox spouse card is $15.00, however, if a prox card is required to obtain door access or a meal plan, then the card requires a $20.00 fee which can be paid by cash, check or credit card.
