Music Therapy - Master of Music

The Master of Music degree program in music therapy is designed for persons who either have been, or plan to be, employed as music therapists.

In addition to meeting the requirements of the University and of the College of Music students must meet the requirements specified below.

Admission

To be admitted to the Master of Music degree program in music therapy on regular status, an applicant must:

  1. Have a bachelor's degree in music therapy from a recognized educational institution, or have completed the courses in music therapy that are required for the Bachelor of Music degree in music therapy at Michigan State University or their equivalents.
  2. Be designated as a Registered Music Therapist by the National Association for Music Therapy, Inc.

Requirements for the Master of Music Degree in Music Therapy

The program is available only under Plan A (with thesis).  A total of 31 credits is required for the degree.  The student's program of study must be approved by the student's academic advisor.  The student must meet the requirements specified below:

               
1. Complete all of the following courses (19 credits):
MUS 864 Research in Music Education 3
MUS 868 Current Studies in Music Therapy 2
MUS 869 Education and Administration in Music Therapy 2
MUS 899 Master's Thesis Research 4
MUS 965 Advanced Research Methods in Music Education 3
Three additional credits in music therapy.
Two credits in music performance at the 800 level.
2. Complete one of the following courses in music history and literature:  Music 412, 413, 414, 415, 416, 420, 421, 422, 423, 427, 428, 440, 835, 836, 837, 892A (2 credits).
3. Complete one of the following courses in music theory or composition:  Music 441, 480, 483, 484, 485, 872, 873, 882 (2 credits).
4. Complete one additional course in music composition, history and literature, or theory at the 400 or 800 level (2 credits).
5. Complete 6 credits in psychology, special education, or health science at the 400–800 level.
6. Participate in music activities during two semesters of enrollment in the program.  The activities must be acceptable to the faculty in the area of music therapy and must be approved by the student's academic advisor.
